An NYZC Course Offering

Catch Your Mind: No Mud, No Lotus

with KOSHIN PALEY ELLISON SENSEI

ABOUT THE COURSE

This year's Catch Your Mind course is a ten-month journey into the heart of Zen through one of its most celebrated and visionary texts—the Lotus Sutra.

This radiant and poetic scripture has inspired Buddhist practitioners for centuries with its bold vision of universal awakening. In this course, we will immerse ourselves in the Lotus Sutra’s rich teachings and vivid imagery as a guide for how to live with courage, clarity, and care—even in the midst of difficulty.

With monthly daylong sessions and structured practice throughout the year, this course invites you into a living relationship with the teachings of the Lotus Sutra, yourself, and your community. Together, we will explore what it means to awaken in everyday life: how we breathe, how we speak, how we relate, how we love.

What You Will Learn:

Over the course of ten monthly classes (with opportunities for practice and connection in between), we will engage in a vibrant rhythm of sitting meditation, close textual study, discussion, and personal reflection. Each session includes both a morning of shared practice and an afternoon of guided inquiry.

Together, we will explore teachings that offer:

  • Practical instruction for cultivating an embodied Zen practice
  • Deep insights into ethics, wisdom, and compassion
  • Imagery and stories to awaken the heart and mind
  • Opportunities to reflect on what matters most to you
  • Supportive peer partnerships and a community of sincere practice

Who Is This Course For?

Whether you are new to Zen or have been practicing for years, this course is for anyone drawn to a spiritual path of depth, honesty, and compassion. You do not need any prior experience with Buddhist texts—just a willingness to show up with curiosity and care.

Join us for this transformative year of study and practice as we enter the world of the Lotus Sutra and discover how its ancient wisdom can illuminate the path of everyday life.

Praise for Koshin's Classes

“I love Koshin’s approach; his primary focus is not intellectual as much as it is practical. He always emphasizes, ‘how does this affect your daily life? how can you use these teachings in your relationships’. I also loved the wonderful openness that I experienced from my fellow classmates, I always felt safe and free to share from my heart. It’s rare to find such an amazing group of people in one setting!
As an academic I have been studying texts for over 40 years. This one (Lotus Sutra) has been the most profound and transformative for me. It has helped me wake up and given me skills to keep my heart open in daily life.”
“Deep bows. Thank you so much. I had a hard time warming up to this text initially, but it really changed me. Thank you for fostering the kind of reading that leads to that.”
“The course (Zen Precepts) challenged me in ways I’d not expected. Occasionally this grew from something in the reading, or in a dharma talk, but invariably reflecting on the question(s) posed pulled me into a deeper understanding of the precepts. With each assignment I spent quite a lot of time thinking and writing (in a journal) about what it means to embody these simple but profound guidelines for daily life. Only near the end of the course was I aware of its impact on my practice.”
