Pathways to Presence: An Exploration of Symbolic Listening

with Leslye Noyes, MDiv, PsyD, LMHC, LP

ABOUT THE COURSE

What if everything you've been searching for is already here?

We all have two modes of being. There's the dimension of the everyday: the nine-to-five, the to-do lists, the surface chatter. And then there's another dimension: more expansive, reflective, oriented toward meaning. Most of us operate entirely in the first mode, never accessing the depth, ease, and liberation available in the second.

Symbolic Listening is the practice of shifting between these dimensions, of learning to hear what someone is truly saying beneath their words, to see the picture of their inner world, their deepest longings, and their path to wholeness.

Join Rev. Leslye Noyes, PsyD, MDiv, a certified Jungian Analyst with 35 years of clinical experience, for this transformative six-month online course (meeting once a month) starting January 2026. This is a rare opportunity to learn Jung's powerful theory and method of Symbolic Listening, in an accessible, experiential format designed for everyone.

What You'll Discover:

  • Learn to listen with radical presence. Through Jung's method of Symbolic Listening, you'll develop the capacity to deeply receive and understand yourself and others, not as problems to be fixed, but as beings with sacred longings trying to emerge.
  • Find possibility in impossibility. Discover how symptoms, struggles, and suffering aren't obstacles to overcome but messages from a deeper, more embodied wisdom, carrying the seeds of transformation and liberation.
  • De-pathologize yourself and others. Move beyond the language of dysfunction and diagnosis to see the deeper meaning and purpose in every human experience.
  • Access the sacred in the mundane. Learn that what you're looking for isn't in some promised tomorrow. It's available right here, right now, in everyday living.
  • Gain practical tools for life and work. Whether you're a therapist, chaplain, counselor, caregiver, or simply someone committed to deeper presence, you'll develop skills that transform how you show up in every relationship and situation.

Who Is This Course For?

This course is open to anyone (any level of experience) committed to living with deeper presence and authentic relating, and it is particularly useful for:

  • Therapists, counselors, and clinicians seeking to deepen their listening capacity
  • Chaplains and pastoral care providers
  • Anyone in caregiving or helping professions
  • People interested in Jungian psychology but unable to pursue full training programs

The Two Modes (or Minds) of Symbolic Listening

In this short introductory video, Leslye discusses the focus of this course and it's aim to develop our deeper, reflective minds; one that is able to hear a another's words as images of their inner world, revealing their suffering and longing.

Praise for LESLYE'S Classes

I highly recommend taking any class taught by Leslye Noyes! She's a seasoned clinician and an accomplished teacher of a variety of courses.  She teaches what she herself loves to learn and to practice. She does extensive and intensive preparation for what she teaches, but distills what she's researched down to its essence for the students she's teaching; and she makes clear that what she teaches is grounded in her own journey and in her therapeutic practice. She enjoys her students, and is sensitively responsive to questions, trying to make sure that the questioner is satisfied. Taking her class on Symbolic Listening will enhance your personal journey and your professional practice.

Carroll Arkema, M.Div., LP, LMFT
”I was first introduced to Leslye and symbolic listening in NYZC's Foundations in Contemplative Care. What she presented gave me a way to draw on my felt sense and visual language to explore what’s happening both in me and between me and my care partners. I then enrolled in her course on symbolic listening to become aware of how the unconscious mind functions and how it interacts with my conscious life and relationships. This course dives into uncharted territory. It lit my fire!“

Yakusan Shapiro
“Leslye is a gifted teacher. She has both extensive knowledge and a deep commitment to making it accessible to others theoretically and practically. I have attended the same class more than once as the way she teaches the material is always alive and refreshes my clinical skills.”

Patricia Llosa
“I have attended two of Leslye's classes (The Feminine and Symbolic Listening). Leslye is a great teacher. She has the ability to present concepts in an interesting  and thought provoking way. Her class, Symbolic Listening, has been helpful to me on a professional and personal level. I leave her classes with new insight and a great bibliography of books to read! I am always on the lookout for Leslye's classes at the Zen Center and highly recommend them.”
