Rev. Gihan Unno is the abbot of Eishō-ji Temple in Kitakami, Iwate. After a career as a professional skier and work in sports and tourism, he entered ango training at Sōjiji in 2008 and later served as a Fukyōshi (dissemination teacher) for Daihonzan Eiheiji (2016–2017; 2018–2019). Appointed abbot in 2019 and designated a Sōtō-shū Tokuha Fukyōshi (international teacher for Soto Zen Buddhism), he continues to teach at Shōbōji Monastery. Unno founded Eishō-ji’s award-winning TERAKOYA children’s program, appears on NHK’s “Listening-to-Zen Sessions,” hosts “Radio de Sutra,” and leads the temple’s Flower-Viewing Hill Project.
