A Zen Buddhist Approach to Wellness & Healing at Howard University College of Medicine

The National Minority AIDS Education and Training Center (NMAETC) in the College of Medicine at Howard University, Washington, DC, announces its 2009 Symposium on Emerging Trends in HIV/AIDS and Minorities. The theme of this year event is The Role of Traditional Healing in HIV Clinical Management. Invited speaker, Robert Chodo Campbell will be discussing how Zen practice assists healing within the specific realms of HIV and AIDS.

Goals of the Symposium:

  • To serve as an open forum for the exchange of information and experiences to better understand the potential of traditional healing practices in improving clinical outcomes.
  • To promote rapport building between traditional healers and scientific clinical personnel as an essential step for the development of a culturally competent prevention and care model for minorities.
  • To disseminate lessons learned and practices that have the potential for addressing the clinical management of HIV/AIDS and/or its complications.

Who Should Attend?
The program is intended for physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, dentists, clinical pharmacist, traditional healers, and other clinical practitioners who work with individuals infected with or affected by the HIV virus.

Presenter Info:

Robert Chodo Campbell, HHC, is a Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director of the New York Zen Center for Contemplative Care. He serves on the Core Faculty for the Center’s Buddhist Chaplaincy Training Programs. Chodo is an Adjunct Professor at the Institute of Buddhist Studies. He is Co-Director of Contemplative Care Services for the Department of Integrative Medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center. Chodo brings his life experience and his Zen and psychoanalytic study to his teachings in the areas of: anxiety and depression, drug and alcohol abuse, and contemplative approaches to care. He began formal Zen training in 1994 and currently he is a Soto Zen Buddhist Priest, at Village Zendo. He gives plenary addresses, workshops and retreats in a variety of settings from corporations to national healthcare conferences.
