Unique Chaplaincy Program Brings "ZenCare" to Patients


January 1, 2009
The Integrative Medicine Department of Beth Israel Medical Center was awarded a grant from the Nathan Cummings Foundation to contract with the New York Zen Center for Contemplative Care to provide chaplaincy for the inpatient oncology floor Koshin Paley Ellison and Robert Chodo Campbell are now the Co-Directors of the Department's Chaplaincy Team.



October 2, 2008
NYZCCC becomes the First Buddhist Organization to Offer Certified Chaplaincy Training

Through our partnership with the HealthCare Chaplaincy, we have been certified by the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE)to offer Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE). We are pleased to be a part of the training community of professional chaplains. Now, those who wish to pursue professional chaplaincy and to certify as a such, they can come to us for training. Four units of CPE are needed to apply for certification. We began our first unit this October with our students who graduated from our Foundations in Buddhist Chaplaincy Training Program.

NYZCCC Partners with Institute of Buddhist Studies at the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley, CA.

On August 29, 2008, The New York Zen Center for Contemplative Care partnered with the Institute of Buddhist Studies, at the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley, CA, for accrediting our Introduction to Buddhist Chaplaincy Training Program as a graduate level course. After a review of our curriculum, the IBS Board awarded students in our program the possibility of receiving 6 graduate credits for students in our “well- grounded”  year-long Introduction to Buddhist Chaplaincy Training Program. The Center’s Core Faculty, Koshin Paley Ellison, Robert Chodo Campbell, and Trudi Jinpu Hirsch Abramson are now designated as Adjunct Faculty members of IBS.

NYZCCC Awarded HealthCare Chaplaincy’s CharityCare Grant of $25,000

On March 5, 2008 the New York Zen Center for Contemplative Care was awarded a CharityCare Grant of $25,000 for general support of our Buddhist Chaplaincy Training Program. The Rev. Dr. Walter J. Smith, S.J., President and CEO of HCC and Christopher C. Grisanti, Chair of the CharityCare Committee and Member of the Board of Trustees, wrote: “Like NYZCCC, The HealthCare Chaplaincy is committed to expanding the core of professionally trained pastoral caregivers to those in need. We look forward to learning how this training will lead to increasing the number of certified Buddhist chaplains.”

HealthCare Chaplaincy (HCC), incorporated in 1961, is one of the largest and most influential multifaith, not-for-profit centers for pastoral care, education, research, and consulting in the world. We look forward to future collaborations with HCC.
